Coddling defined:
The Cambridge Dictionary defines coddling as protecting someone or something too much. Their example is,
“The steel industry is coddled by trade protection and massive subsidies.”
(Another definition of coddling relates to cooking eggs, but that’s for another day.)
People can also be coddled. The book, “Coddling of the American Mind,” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, delves into the “safety culture” on college and university campuses, and the risk that culture presents to “free speech, mental health, education, and, ultimately, democracy.”
If you don’t have time for the book, there is an excellent film version.
This week I interviewed the filmmakers. This movie is so impactful… I would urge anyone who has a young person in their lives to watch it.
