Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny
Last Week on The Michele Tafoya Podcast...
Are Swifties Happy?
There had been rumors that Taylor Swift might be the next Super Bowl Halftime performer. I was dubious because (1) she’s not in the RocNation wheelhouse; (2) she’s hoping her fiancé will be playing in February’s championship game; and (3) she’s planning a wedding.
None of those things would necessarily keep her out of contention for the role, and certainly, she would draw a record audience.
But Bad Bunny is the choice.
Still, Swifties won the week with Taylor’s release of “Life of a Showgirl,” although the album hasn’t received rave reviews from critics I respect.
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny’s selection has divided the country along predictable lines: liberals are lauding the choice, while conservatives are cringing.
There is also the suspicion that the NFL is making a political statement. What better way to jab at the Trump Administration than choosing a Puerto Rican artist who has made his disdain for the POTUS and ICE very public?
Frankly, I’m exhausted by all the culture wars. One side pushes its agenda, the other side pushes back. Both sides end up moving further apart until both look extreme.
And those of us in the middle feel ignored and irrelevant.
Good times.
Meanwhile, here are the artists I would have considered for a more unifying halftime:
Teddy Swims
Miley Cyrus
Morgan Wallen
BTS
Foo Fighters
Dogs catching frisbees
Sabrina Carpenter
Elton John
Jelly Roll
Dolly Parton, Reba McIntyre, and Carrie Underwood
Ed Sheeran
AC/DC
An ’80s hair band revival (suggested by a follower on X)
But what do I know?

What is free speech exactly? Can I Say That?
Dr. Chloe Carmichael is the author of “Can I Say That? Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use it Fearlessly.” In the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension and Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the First Amendment has been misrepresented, misunderstood, and used to score political points. Dr. Chloe sheds light on how free speech is alive and well — and must thrive — in America.
