We Get The Politicians We Deserve.
To my birthplace, California:
Stop voting for empathy. Stop voting for good-looking people with no integrity. Stop voting based on identity. Stop voting for the smooth-talkers. There is too much at stake.
What will it take for you to vote in a primary? Yeah, a primary — before the general election.
Because primaries determine who the available choices are in the general.
If you haven’t been satisfied with your options lately, maybe it’s time to get invested in elections sooner.
Those watching the California fires up close must have questions about who is in charge of the most basic, important tasks of public safety.
Having been born, raised, and educated in California, I’m well aware of Santa Ana winds, brushfires, earthquakes, and other risks residents face.
What makes this current event unusual and startling is the lack of foresight, organization, preparedness, and seriousness by state and local politicians and the programs they administer.
From Governor Gavin Newsom to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to the LA Department of Water and Power, there is blame to go around.
And no, the criticism is not based on race, as a couple of actresses are claiming.
How much of California’s (and other blue states) environmental policy is built on virtue-signaling about climate change versus deep, second-level thinking about their decisions?
Example: when I was a kid, the grocery stores stopped using paper bags in favor of plastic ones. Why? Trees. Environmentalists didn’t want to cut down trees. Trees — one of the most sustainable resources on earth.
Did the “conservationists” even consider what plastic bags would mean to the environment? Did they do any second-level thinking beyond, “We can stop killing trees!”?
Does anyone in California — and the buck stops with you, Gavin — think about the consequences of their rules regarding water use, brush clearing, or budgeting for fire departments and reservoirs?
I mean, if they truly believed climate change was an existential threat, why have they made such stupid decisions about water usage and funding fire departments?
A lot will come out about all of this. I encourage whistle-blowers and investigators to straighten their spines and do what is right.
And I encourage all Californians to think more deeply about how politicians — local, county, and state — spend their tax dollars.
I mean, did you know this person was making $300,000 per year?!?
